GITA YOGA |
Yoga is a series of gentle movements and postures (asanas) which increases both your physical health and the focus of your mind, the purpose of which is to bring harmony and balance to your emotional, physical and mental bodies. On a physical level, the stretching, opening, flexing, squeezing and releasing during yoga postures helps to improve the functioning of your nervous system, lungs, circulation, internal organs, endocring glands, joints and muscles. Yoga improves your body's ability to function at its best and improves the flow of energy (pana) around your body.
There are many different styles of Hatha (physical) Yoga. This style of yoga is called "Gita". It was first brought to Australia over 50 years ago by Margrit Segesman who founded Gita International Yoga. Margrit was sent specifically by her guru to bring this style of yoga to Australia, as Gita Yoga is particularly suited to benefit people experiencing the stresses placed on your bodies and minds in today's society. |
The structure of a Gita yoga class generally includes:
* Limbering - To loosen up the muscles and joints
* Pranayama - Breathing exercises to increase your lung functioning and the amount of 'pana' or energy in your body
* A sequence of ten postures - These postures serve to switch on the brain and work on the central and autonomous nervous systems and the endocrine (hormone producing) gland system
* Savasana - A relaxation exercise known to help release emotional or physical tension stored in the body.

This style of yoga is designed for everyone. Regardless of age, flexibility, fitness level, yoga is for everyone and everyone can benefit from yoga. Part of yoga is also becoming more aware of your body. When you are aware you will know how far you are able to move into a pose and what is right for you. After only two or three classes, you may notice an increase in your ability to cope with the challanges of life. |
Wear loose, comfortable, stretchy clothes when participating in classes. It is usual to remove your shoes and socks in class (as socks can be slippery). It is also recommended not to eat anything heavy before a yoga class, although it is beneficial to drink water. |
